Completion of the Ohio Hunter Education Course is required for all first-time hunting license buyers in Ohio.   For Ohio Licensing Information go to the Ohio Division of Wildlife

The hunter education course covers topics such as firearms, ammunition, gun handling, archery, hunter responsibilities, outdoor safety, wildlife management and conservation, and other related information.

This course is beneficial for everyone, even if hunting is not your goal. Ohio's hunter education course is accepted all across North America.

Ohio offers three types of hunter education courses, which include instructor-led and home-study courses and proficiency testing for those 18 years of age and older.  Contact the Ohio Division of wildlife to schedule proficiency testing.  Hunter education courses are offered year round.

2007 Hunter Education Instructor Training Workshops

Workshops for individuals interested in becoming a hunter education instructor in Ohio are being offered at five locations across the state starting in March.

Individuals must complete a volunteer instructor training workshop to become a certified hunter education instructor. Participants must be at least 18 years of age and have successfully completed a hunter education course. Ohio currently has 1,700 volunteer instructors who train hunters to be safe and responsible in the field.

NEW for Ohio:  Apprentice Hunting License and Fur Taker Permit

Ohio has a new category of hunting license called the apprentice hunting license. The apprentice license was developed as part of a nation-wide effort called “Families Afield.” Families Afield projects are designed to remove barriers that prevent hunters from passing along the hunting heritage. Apprentice hunting licenses or fur taker permits allow new hunters and trappers, both adults and youth, to sample the experience of hunting under the mentorship of a licensed adult prior to completing a hunter or trapper education course.

NRA Launching Web Site Devoted To Hunters' Rights
 

On November 1, NRA is launching a new Web site devoted to hunters' rights. All factors that affect your freedom to hunt, and the future of the sport itself, will be addressed at www.nrahuntersrights.org.

The site will not tell you how to hunt, where to put your tree stand or what the best guns and loads are for your favorite species. Many Web sites and magazines can already tell you all that.
The site will alert you about threats to hunting and NRA's efforts to combat them -- our direct lobbying efforts at every level, our hunter recruitment and instruction programs and our funding of conservation and range improvement projects.
